Light Pollution

Finding a dark site to show your friends or family the Milky Way, or to point out the Constellations is becoming more difficult due to Light Pollution.
Light pollution is Man made and sadly we don't seem to have the desire or the urgency to tackle this issue. At this moment in time, there will be very few places that you or our children will be able to see those beautiful celestial objects that the heavens have to offer us or to witness the beauty of our home galaxy the Milky Way.

The three images below were all taken from the same place in the New Forest. Looking South there was Bournemouth about 14 miles away. Looking North is Salisbury about 13 miles away looking East was Southampton about 22 miles away.
As you can see by my images Light Pollution is very much a problem, it not only destroys the beauty of the night sky, it also has a profound affect on Humans as well as wildlife.

We need to let the appropriate lighting agencies and planning departments know that when it comes to granting planning permission, approval will only be granted for full cut off shielding on all street and motorway lighting. This will be one small step that will help in readdressing the scourge of light pollution. We need to point out the fact that light pollution is Man made, and the effects can be reversed.
